We are happy to share that our colleague Magdalini Stavrianou from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) took part in the European Metallurgical Conference 2025 (EMC), held in Hamburg from 22 to 25 June 2025. This conference was organized by GMDB, Gesellschaft der Metallurgen und Bergleute e.V., German Society of Metallurgists and Miners is an international forum for technical-scientific exchange of experiences between industry, public authorities and science. It is an important part of the international network in the areas of raw material extraction and non-ferrous metallurgy.
The European Metallurgical Conference is one of the most important events in Europe for non-ferrous metallurgy. It brings together researchers, engineers, industry experts, and equipment suppliers to exchange knowledge and share recent developments in the field. For the HEPHAESTUS project, EMC is a key platform to show applied results to an audience that understands both technical and industrial relevance. It helps us connect with potential stakeholders, learn from others working on similar challenges, and position our research in the European context.
Magdalini is a metallurgical engineer working with the TESMET, Technologies for Sustainable Metallurgy group at NTUA. After some years in the industrial sector, she returned to the university to focus on applied pyrometallurgical research.
At EMC 2025, she had the opportunity to present part of the work that her team is doing for the HEPHAESTUS Horizon Europe project. Her talk focused on thermodynamic modelling and experimental trials related to ISP (Imperial Smelting Process) slag, which is a by-product from zinc and lead extraction. Instead of stockpiling it, the project team investigates how to recover iron from this slag in the form of pig iron, without using fluxes. A desulfurization step is also included, to reduce the sulfur content in the final product. Magdalini presented this work, carried out together with Adamantia Lazou and Dimitris Sparis, as part of the wider HEPHAESTUS efforts in sustainable metallurgy.
“It was a pleasure and honour to be at EMC,” Magdalini said. “The conference brings together people from industry and academia, and it was inspiring to meet others who are passionate about metallurgy and applied research. Many thanks to GDMB for a great event!”
We are proud to see the Hephaestus project presented on this international stage and look forward to sharing more results in the near future.
